Anal Gland Treatment

Anal glands are used as a form of marking in dogs. When dogs have a bowel movement a small amount of anal gland material is secreted which leaves their signature scent behind. Some dogs have long-term issues with their anal glands- constant licking of the anus or scooting, whereas other dogs may never have an issue. Should I drain my dog’s anal glands at home?

Only under the advice and direction of our veterinarians should you express your dog’s anal glands. Dogs that have long-term problems and are unable to express their anal glands on their own should have it done manually on a regular basis. Often in these cases, there will be an infection or an impaction that will require veterinary attention to resolve. Our veterinary team will check your dog’s anal glands to ensure they are free from other disease processes.

If my dog scoots on the carpet a lot, does this mean their anal glands are impacted?
