Congratulations on your new furry family member! There is nothing more precious than watching a kitten explore their world and experience things for the first time. Veterinary care is an essential part of getting them off to their best, healthiest start.
Vaccinations for your kitten are given by your veterinarian to help prevent disease. They are important for young cats as this is when they are most susceptible to disease. At Lomsnes Veterinary Hospital kittens are given a full health check and immunized at 8, 12, and 16 weeks of age. At this time, your veterinarian can address all the concerns and questions you may have regarding your kitten.
Kittens often carry parasites like worms and mites, which can infect other pets as well as family members in your home. Parasite control products prescribed by your kitten’s veterinarian will ensure they are healthy and your home is parasite-free. *Note: some deworming and flea products at pet stores can be ineffective and even harmful to your pet your veterinarian’s recommendation is the best for your kitten.
A good quality kitten food and feeding schedule is essential to developing minds and bodies. Good nutrition is the easiest and most cost-effective way to keep your new kitty healthy and happy. Some diseases seen in cats later in life could have been controlled or prevented by proper nutrition. Your veterinarian will recommend a diet that is best suited for your kitten’s specific needs.
Often a kitten is acquired with little or no cost (i.e. free from a litter off the farm or Kijiji). Great! Think of that as extra finances to put into their health care and wellness. A free cat is a great start, but in reality, ensuring your new kitten has a healthy and happy life will have some cost. However, it is all worth it when they snuggle up to you and purr a happy tone!
